JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 29, 2018) – In their return to the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex, the ETSU men’s tennis team defeated the Charlotte 49ers 6-1 on Thursday afternoon. The Bucs improve their overall record to 9-6, while Charlotte drops to 9-12.
Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) and Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) got the first win of the match after they defeated Benjamin Wayand and Siem Fenne 6-2. The duo improves their record to 8-1. The 49ers were able to win back-to-back matches in doubles to clinch the point to take an early 1-0 lead.
Nothing was going to stop the Bucs, as they would win six straight singles matches to win the match. Rookie Tasei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan) tied the match after he defeated Siem Fenne 6-1, 7-6 (2). Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) gave ETSU the go-ahead point with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Collin Thomson. At the No. 4 singles, David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) continued ETSU’s winning ways with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Oriol Puig Forne. Clinching the match for the Bucs was Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) who defeated Benjamin Wayand 6-3, 7-6 (7). Since winning a match in doubles play, Fontcuberta and Herrera both went undefeated on the day also picking up wins in singles. Fontcuberta won 6-4, 7-6 (5) against Constandinos Christoforou, while Herrera came back to win a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 match against Luca Keist.
The Bucs return to action this Saturday, March 31 when they host the Wofford Terriers at 2:00p.m. at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.
