JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 31, 2018) – The ETSU men’s tennis team defeated the Wofford Terriers 5-2 on Saturday morning at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex. With this win, the Bucs improve to 10-6 and 4-0 in the SoCon, while also remaining undefeated when playing on their home court.
Wofford began doubles action with a 7-5 win over Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela), who paired for the first time this season. Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) and David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) evened things out after earning a 6-2 win at the No. 3 doubles spot. The Terriers would take a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point.
Este kicked things off for the Bucs after defeating Javi Casasola 6-1, 6-0 to even out the match. Herrera followed in his footsteps picking up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lucas Cerbelli. The Terriers tied the match once again after Omar Williams defeated Tasei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan) 6-3, 7-5. The Bucs would win the next three singles matches to take the win. Fontcuberta put the Bucs ahead after he defeated Edu Villar. He came from behind to win a three-set match of 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Gonzalez would clinch the match for ETSU when he picked up a 6-3, 7-5 win over Kyle Barr. Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezeula) gave the Bucs their last point of the day, also in a three-set battle. He won 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 against Julian Chousa.
ETSU gets right back on the courts tomorrow, April 1. They will host the Mercer Bears at 2:00 p.m.
