JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 1, 2018) – It was a successful week for the ETSU men’s tennis team, who picked up three victories, including two conference wins. The Bucs got off to a hot start after sweeping all three doubles matches. Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) and David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) won the first match of the day after defeating Stathis Tsiranidis and Carver Arant 6-2. Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Nicholas Guillon and Ruben Vanoppen. Mercer’s Oliver Stuart was able to grab a win from Juan Lugo at the No. 2 spot with a 7-6, 6-1 victory. Gonzalez helped the Bucs gets closer to match point after he defeated Fernando Guardia 6-4, 7-5. Herrera then came up big for the Bucs taking down Sam Philp, who was last ranked 101 in the ITA/Oracle rankings. The 6-4, 6-2 win also helped the Bucs clinch the match. Miyamoto was able to give the Bucs their last point of the match after coming back to win a three-set match. He defeated Carver Arant 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. In the last match of the day, Mercer’s Ruben Vanoppen was able to get another point for his team in a three-set battle with Este. Vanoppen won 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, but the Bucs would ultimately win the match to stay undefeated in the conference.
"I'm very happy with this week's results," said head coach Martin Stiegwardt. "The guys fought through adversity in some instances and having an injury in the middle of the lineup is always tough. We had to change doubles around and it paid off today vs. Mercer. We lost the doubles point twice this week and came back and won, which says a lot about this team's resiliency. Robert had an outstanding week beating two ranked players."
The Bucs will take a week off before returning to action. They will host Chattanooga on Saturday, April 7 at 10:00 a.m.
