JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 19, 2018) – After claiming the No. 1 overall seed in the Southern Conference Tournament, the ETSU men’s tennis team will open the quarterfinal round on Friday, April 20 in Chattanooga, Tenn. against No. 8 The Citadel at 9:00 a.m.
About the Bucs
In his first year as head coach, Martin Stiegwardt has led the Bucs to an incredible season.
ETSU concluded its regular season last week with a 13-7 overall record and a 7-0 conference mark. It was the Bucs’ seventh season title in the last eight seasons and marks the 18th regular season title.
The Bucs received four postseason awards, which was announced on Wednesday by the league offices. Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) and Robert Herrera (Barcelona, Spain) each claimed First Team honors. Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) was placed on the Second team at the No. 6 singles spot. Rounding out the awards for the Bucs was Fontcuberta and David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) who earned a spot on the Second Team at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Aside from postseason awards, Fontcuberta finished the season with a 15-4 record, while Herrera went 13-5 at the No. 1 spot all year. Gonzalez was also strong for the Bucs after finishing the regular season with just two losses, going 14-2. As a team, ETSU went 72-36 in singles and 32-23 in doubles.
Previewing The Citadel
The Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 10-24 record and went 0-6 in the SoCon. The Citadel’s last match came from a 6-1 loss against the Bucs. Both teams will meet again in the tournament. During the regular season, Gavin Stewart was able to give the Bulldogs their only point against the Bucs. Stewart holds a 17-15 record in singles. There are four other Bulldogs with singles records in double figure wins.
The Bulldogs have switched up their doubles play quite a lot, using multiple lineups. The team holds a 31-77 record in doubles action.
About the SoCon Tournament
The three-day tournament is being held in Chattanooga, Tenn. at the Champions Club. The semifinal rounds will begin Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m., and the championship match will be played Sunday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
If the Bucs were to win in the quarterfinals, they will play the winner of No. 4 UNCG/No. 5 Samford at 10 p.m. at the Champions Club.
