SPARTANBURG, S.C. (July 9, 2018) – The Southern Conference announced its Academic All-Conference selections for the spring semester Monday afternoon, as ETSU placed 47 on the prestigious list.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average at the end of the semester of competition and have completed at least three semesters academically. The student-athlete must have also competed in at least one-half of the team's competition.
Senior track and field athlete Macy Carrier (Bluff City, Tenn.), who has earned a spot on the Southern Conference All-Academic Team every semester she was eligible, maintained a perfect 4.0 for the spring semester.
Additionally, six other ETSU student-athletes turned in a 3.9 GPA or higher. Softball’s Demi Coleman (Maryville, Tenn.) and Kylie Toler (Bradenton, Fla.), track and field’s Kaitlyn Lay (Knoxville, Tenn.) women’s basketball’s Malloree Schurr (Montgomery, Texas) men’s golfer Geuntae Kim (Daegu, South Korea) and women’s golfer Hee Ying Loy (Johor, Malaysia) each achieved this honor.
The women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams amassed the most combined selections with 14 from eight student-athletes. Men’s track and field finished right behind them with 11 indoor and outdoor selections by six athletes.
The ETSU softball team added six athletes, while baseball had five student-athletes qualify. The women’s basketball team had three members on the list. Men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s tennis and women’s tennis each had a pair of athletes make the spring team.
The SoCon announced 570 selections by 486 different student-athletes for the Academic All-Conference squad, including 84 receiving the honor for both indoor and outdoor track and field.
The 570 selections sets a new SoCon record for the spring semester since merging winter and spring sports in the 2015-16 year. The previous record was 479 selections in 2017.
The SoCon also announced 32 student-athletes (38 total selections) with a 4.0 GPA, shattering the previous record of 22 set in Spring 2016, regardless of fall, winter or spring season.
