Gonzalez and Fontcuberta advance to doubles semifinals

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Sept. 22, 2018) – On day two of the Gamecock Invitational, five Buccaneers continued to advance in the draws. The doubles duo of Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) and David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) advanced to the semifinals in the Flight A doubles draw.

In Flight A singles, Fontcuberta had two wins on the day. First, he earned a win over UNC’s Brian Cernoch and then moved on to take on South Carolina’s Raphael Lambling. Fontcuberta won 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 over Lambling. He will play in round four of the loser’s bracket tomorrow when he will play Miami’s Francisco Bastias.

David Gonzalez had a win in his first match of the day. He defeated Mateo Julio from Purdue 1-6, 6-4, 10-6, but then fell to MSU’s Trevor Foley 6-4, 2-6, 10-5. 

Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) had a great day, as he first defeated GSU’s Quentin Coulaud 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. He moved on to play Antonio Muniz from Georgia Southern and won 6-4, 3-6, 10-4. He will play in the round four of the loser’s bracket tomorrow when he takes on GSU’s Giles Hussey.

In Flight B singles, Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) and Adam O’Shannessy (New South Wales, Australia) both played today. Khamis fell to South Carolina’s Beau Pelletier 6-0, 6-1, while O’Shannessy fell to Wofford’s Omar Williams 6-4, 6-3. Khamis is will take on Presbyterian’s Max Benson in round four of the loser’s bracket.

Two doubles duos competed today. Gonzalez and Fontcuberta won 8-2 over GSU’s Grinvalds and Duarte. They will advance to the semifinals tomorrow and will play another GSU pair of MacFarlane and Hussey.

In the Flight B doubles, Rengifo and Khamis competed, but fell 8-3 to Phillips and Croyder from UGA. Since it was only their first loss, they will still have a chance to compete and will take on GSU’s Coulaud and Lazo in the loser’s bracket.

The final day of the Gamecock Fall Invitational concludes tomorrow, Sept. 23.
