Men’s tennis wraps up fall action at CCB Invitational

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Nov. 4, 2018) –  The ETSU men’s tennis team concluded their fall season after finishing action at the CCB Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

In the Crimson singles draw, both Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Columbia) made it to the end of both sides of the bracket. Fontcuberta won the left side of bracket after defeating Lipscomb’s Pablo Cafferena 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4). Despite dropping his first singles match, Fontcuberta won out throughout the last two days.

Rengifo made it to the championship match, but was defeated by Edson Ortiz from Alabama, who earned the number one seed coming into the tournament. Rengifo also was undefeated until today’s match.

Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) and David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) played in the white singles draw. They each had walkovers and did not play today.

The Barcelona, Spain natives Fontcuberta and Gonzalez made it to the Crimson doubles draw championship match. After a tight battle, they fell 8-7 (3) to Hain and Junk from Ole Miss.

Khamis and Rengifo won the consolation side of the bracket after defeating Chen and Yamada from Kentucky 8-6.

The ETSU men’s tennis team will officially begin their season on January 19, 2019 when they host Appalachian State.
