JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 18, 2019) – A new season begins for the ETSU men’s tennis team tomorrow, Jan. 19, as they host Appalachian State. Due to the weather, the match will be played indoors at the Bristol Racquet Club in Bristol, Tenn. The match is slated for 11:30 p.m.
Last year the team compiled a 16-8 overall record and won the Southern Conference tournament title, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
ETSU lost just one senior in Robert Herrera, but welcome Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezeula), Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt), Mark Papadopoulos (Sydney, Australia) and Adam O’Shannessy (New South Wales, Australia).
The Bucs return seven with a wealth of experience; Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezeula), Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain), David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain), Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezeula), Chris Mikrovas (Athens, Greece), Taisei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia).
Appalachian State finished the 2018 season with a 12-11 record and earned their second Sun Belt tournament title. The Mountaineers return six, while welcoming four freshmen. They return Ben Webster who finished with 12 victories in singles play and had 15 doubles win with Alex Pavkovich. Pavkovich had nine wins in doubles last season.
