BRISTOL, Tenn. (Jan. 19, 2019) – In their 2019 season debut, the ETSU men’s tennis team swept the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Saturday morning at the Bristol Racquet Club.
Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Columbia) and Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) paired in doubles action and gave the Bucs a 6-3 win over Alex Brea and Milo Bargeron to begin the match. Clinching the doubles point for ETSU would be Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Chris Mikrovas (Athens, Greece). The duo defeated the Mountaineer’s pair of Alex Pavkovich and Bence Tamas 7-5.
ETSU would carry their momentum into singles play to win all six matches. Lugo gave the Bucs their first win in singles after winning 6-2 in set one and had a 1-0 advantage in the second set before Afonso Viana retired. Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) won 6-1, 6-0 over Pavkovich at the No. 2 singles spot. Newcomer Khamis would secure the match for the Bucs after defeating Zion Heaven 6-4, 6-2. After coming off an impressive freshman campaign, Rengifo had a comeback win over Milo Bargeron. He won 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) were the final two Bucs to finish the match. Gonzalez defeated Campbell Stone 6-2, 6-0 and Este won 6-2, 6-4 over Blake Carter.
The Bucs travel to Iowa City next week to take on Iowa on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7:00 p.m.
