IOWA CITY, Iowa. (Jan. 25, 2019) – The ETSU men’s tennis team had their first road test of the season traveling to Iowa City, Iowa. The Bucs took on the Hawkeyes, but fell in a close battle, 4-3.
Iowa jumped out on top first after Kareem Allaf and Jonas Larsen defeated Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Chris Mikrovas (Athens, Greece) 6-1. Iowa’s Will Davies and Oliver Okonkwo clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia).
Moving into singles action, the Hawkeyes took a 2-0 advantage after Will Davies defeated David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain.), 6-0, 6-3. At the No. 6 singles spot, Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) fell to Piotr Smietana 6-3, 6-3. Khamis was able to put the Bucs on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Oliva Okonkwo. Iowa’s Kareem Allaf would clinch the match at the No. 1 singles spot after defeating Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) 6-4, 7-5. After falling behind in the first set, sophomore Rengifo came back to win the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Lugo also had a comeback win at the No. 3 singles spot. He won 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 over Joe Tyler.
ETSU returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 when they take on Butler at 3:00 p.m. (ET)
