IOWA CITY, Iowa (Jan. 26, 2019) – In their second day of playing at the HTRC in Iowa City, Iowa, the ETSU men’s tennis team swept their second opponent of the season after defeating Butler 7-0. The Bucs improve to 2-1, while Butler falls to 1-2.
The duo of Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) gave the Bucs an advantage after winning the first doubles match 6-2. Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win.
The Bucs would continue to stay hot as they reeled off six straight singles wins. Fontcuberta gave ETSU a 2-0 lead after a 6-2, 6-3 win over Mason Dragos at the No. 1 spot. Fontcuberta’s doubles partner, Miguel Este also dominated in singles after defeating Spencer Lang 6-1, 6-4. Clinching the match for ETSU would be Khamis, as he earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Thomas Brennan at the No. 3 spot. Lugo went 2-0 on the day when he captured a 7-5, 6-4 win over Michael Dickson. David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) had a comeback win at the No. 5 spot. He defeated Ryan Roegner 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8). Lastly, rounding out the complete sweep for the Bucs was Rengifo. He also came back to win after falling behind 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
ETSU continues to play on the road next weekend, Feb. 1 at VCU. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
