Rengifo clinches match as Bucs defeat VCU 4-3

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 1, 2019) – The ETSU men’s tennis team improved their record to 3-1 after defeating VCU 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.

VCU was able to take a 1-0 advantage after winning the doubles point. Philip Mobius and Inaki Rivero Crespo defeated Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) and Miguel Este (Cararcas, Venezuela) 6-1. VCU’s pair of Rayane Stable and Javier Amantegui clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot.

Este evened the match after he defeated Crespo 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 6 single spot. Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) was able to win the first set, but the Rams’ Arvid Noren came back to win the match 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) tied the match at 2-2. He won a three-set battle of 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 over Inigo Torre Martin. Senior David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) would give the Bucs a lead in his comeback win at the No. 5 singles spot. Gonzalez defeated Amantegui 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) clinched the match for ETSU after a 6-4, 6-3 win over Stefan Petrovic. Fontcuberta had one of the longest matches of the day at the No. 1 spot, but was defeated by Rayane Stable 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (15-13).

ETSU returns to action this Sunday, Feb. 3 at Old Dominion. The match is slated for 11:00 a.m.
