GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 22, 2019) – ETSU Men’s Tennis kicked off the 2019 Southern Conference campaign in convincing fashion, sweeping the Spartans by the final score of 7-0 in Greensboro, N.C. at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. With the win, the Bucs improve to 5-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play, while UNCG falls to 1-3 (0-1 SoCon).
ETSU’s doubles tandem of Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) and Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) kick started the match off with a 6-2 victory from the No. 2 doubles position, besting Roger Rogowski and Ian Melnik. The Bucs clinched the doubles point following a 7-5 victory by Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) and Taisei Miyamoto (Chiba, Japan) in the third doubles slot as the duo defeated UNCG’s Hugh Knapp and Jack Burkill. UNCG claimed the victory in the number one doubles position as Nico Grewe and Ollie Palmer fended off Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Chris Mikrovas (Athens, Greece) by the final of 6-4.
Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) doubled the ETSU lead after claiming a straight-set victory (6-2, 6-1) over Rogowski in the fourth singles position. Este pulled the Bucs to within one point of clinching the victory with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Burkill in the No. 5 singles position. Miyamoto stepped up in the sixth singles position, earning his first singles victory in his first appearance to clinch the match for the Blue and Gold with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over UNCG’s Cooper Wyett. Rengifo, Fontcuberta and Lugo capped off the match with three-set victories from the No. 1-3 spots, respectively.
ETSU will return to action on Sunday when the Bucs take on Wofford in their second SoCon match of the weekend. The contest is slated to commence at 1 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
