Rengifo snatches second SoCon Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 26, 2019) – For the second time this season, ETSU sophomore Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) has been honored as the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. This is the second player of the week honor in Rengifo’s career.

The Colombia native began the week by setting the tone with a doubles win in the No. 2 spot alongside teammate Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) to pull the Bucs within one win of clinching the doubles point from the Spartans. Rengifo also enabled ETSU in completing the 7-0 sweep over UNCG after earning a hard-fought, three-set victory in the top singles position over Nico Grewe (6-4, 5-7, 6-4).

The sophomore star was back in action on Sunday against Wofford in Spartanburg. This time it was Rengifo and Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) clinching the doubles point for the Bucs with a 6-3 win over Bryce Keim and Omar Williams for the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. Later in singles action with ETSU ahead 4-0, Rengifo settled in for a straight-set triumph over Julian Chousa in the top singles position with a 6-2, 6-3 win to push the Bucs’ lead to 5-0.

Overall, Rengifo finished 4-0 this past weekend, including 2-0 in both singles and doubles play. On the season, Rengifo is 8-1 in singles play, including 4-1 when playing at the No. 1 singles position. The Colombia sophomore is also 5-3 in doubles action, having won back-to-back doubles contests.

Rengifo and the Bucs will be back in action this Saturday, March 2 when they host University of Louisiana at 9 a.m. The contest will also serve as the first match played at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.
