Bucs to face Charlotte and Chattanooga

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 28, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers will take their three-match winning streak to the road this weekend, including one Southern Conference match. The men’s tennis team will square off with Charlotte on Friday, March 29 at noon in Charlotte, N.C., followed by Chattanooga on Sunday, March 31 at noon in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Bucs enter the weekend with a 12-4 record, including 4-0 in SoCon action.

Battling the Bucs
ETSU has been dominate as of late, winning nine of its last 10 matches. The Bucs’ lone loss during the run was a 4-3 defeat the hands of Middle Tennessee State on March 15 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. ETSU is 4-3 on the road this season heading into the weekend. The Bucs are led in singles play by Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) with a 14-1 overall record, having won nine consecutive matches. Rengifo is also 4-0 in league play this season, including a win over a Top 125 ITA Ranked player. ETSU also boasts three other players in the double-digit win category as Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) has 12 wins and Sergi Fontcuberta (Barcelona, Spain) and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) each have 11.

The Bucs are 26-15 in doubles play, including an astonishing 12-2 in the number three doubles position. Fontcuberta and David Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) lead the Bucs in doubles wins with nine, all from the third position. Khamis and Rengifo are not far behind the Spain duo, tallying seven wins of their own.

Challenging Charlotte
The 49ers are 7-10 on the season heading into Friday’s match, having dropped three consecutive matches prior to the showdown. However, Charlotte is undefeated at home with a 3-0 record, picking up wins against Presbyterian, Winthrop and most notably No. 23 Penn. The 49ers are below .500 in singles play with a record of 108-121, led in singles action by Luca Keist with an 8-9 record in the top singles spot. Keist also competes in the top doubles position alongside Constandinos Christoforou with a 9-5 record.

Matching up with the Mocs
Chattanooga has been back and forth with the .500 line, holding a record of 10-9 on the season. Don’t let the record fool you however, as the Mocs are strong at home with an 8-4 mark. Chattanooga has dropped its last two matches and is 1-2 on the season in SoCon play. The Mocs are very top heavy with the singles lineup as Niklas Gerdes and Tomas Rodriguez are both 13-6 in the top two singles positions, respectively. The same could be said of doubles play as the Mocs are 11-7 in the top position and 14-3 in the second doubles hole. Gerdes and Rodriguez team up together in the number two spot in doubles to form a tough out for opponents, holding a 14-2 record this season.
