Bucs Set Program Record with 262 Student-Athletes on SoCon Honor Roll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (June 25, 2020) – It was another record-setting day for ETSU Athletics, this time thanks to the Southern Conference Honor Roll. The Bucs placed 262 student-athletes on the 2019-20 SoCon Honor Roll, blowing by the program’s previous record of 229 set in 2017-18. The SoCon office released the Honor Roll on Thursday morning.


ETSU places record-setting 62 student-athletes on SoCon Spring All-Academic list

SoCon cancels remainder of spring competition

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (March 17, 2020) -- By unanimous votes of the league’s Council of Presidents and directors of athletics, the Southern Conference is canceling all athletics-related activities for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year, including competition, championships, organized practices and meetings, due to the ongoing threat of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, Commissioner Jim Schaus announced Tuesday.


Men’s Tennis Announces the signing of Francisco Lamas

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 25, 2020) – ETSU Men’s Tennis Head Coach Martin Stiegwardt happily announces the signing of Francisco Lamas to a national letter of intent. ETSU Tames Tigers in Weekend Clash

CLEMSON, S.C. (March 7, 2020) – No opponent has proven too big for the Bucs this season and that showed on Saturday as the ETSU Men’s Tennis team toppled another ranked opponent, this time defeating 46th-ranked Clemson by the final score of 4-1. The Bucs have gone toe-to-toe with several ranked opponents this year and have now defeated one in a true road match with the win over the Tigers today in Clemson, S.C.


Tigers Await Bucs in Nonconference Match

CLEMSON, S.C. (March 6, 2020) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis squad will now travel to Clemson, S.C. for a nonconference match with Clemson on Saturday at 1 p.m. The match against the ACC foe will be played at The Duckworth Family Tennis Facility on the campus of Clemson.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 1, 2020) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team won its fifth consecutive match with a third consecutive shutout, defeating UNCG by the final score of 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex in Johnson City, Tenn. With the win, the Bucs improved to 6-6 on the season and remain undefeated in league play with a 2-0 record.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 29, 2020) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team picked up an impressive 4-0 win over Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at the Bristol Racquet Club in Bristol, Tenn. With the win, ETSU improves to 5-6 on the season after winning its fourth consecutive match.


Pair of Home Matches on Docket for Bucs

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 28, 2020) – Following a doubleheader in Alabama this past weekend, the Bucs return to Tennessee for a pair of home matches against Charlotte and Southern Conference foe, UNCG. ETSU will begin the weekend with a 1 p.m. match against Charlotte on Saturday at the Bristol Racquet Club. The Bucs will then move outdoor on Sunday, March 1 to host UNCG in a SoCon clash at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.


ETSU Stings Hornets in 5-0 Shutout

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Feb. 23, 2020) – Following the Southern Conference opening win over Samford (6-1), the ETSU Men’s Tennis team decided to stay an extra night to take on Alabama State in Montgomery, Ala. The Bucs went into Montgomery and came out victorious for the third consecutive match, defeating the Hornets by the final score of 5-0.


Bucs Earn Conference-Opening Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 22, 2020) – For the first time this season, the ETSU Men’s Tennis team won back-to-back matches. The Bucs accomplished the feat after besting Samford in the 2020 Southern Conference opener by the final score of 6-1 in Birmingham, Ala. With the win, ETSU improves to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in league play, while winning its eighth consecutive SoCon regular season match.


Bulldogs Await Bucs in SoCon Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 21, 2020) – The conference season begins on Saturday for the Buccaneers as ETSU travels to Birmingham, Ala. to take on Samford in the Southern Conference opener. The match between the Bucs and Bulldogs is set for 3 p.m. (ET). ETSU looks to continue its dominance in league play after finishing a perfect 7-0 in SoCon action last season en route to both the regular season and tournament title.


Bottom of the Lineup Delivers in 5-2 Victory

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 16, 2020) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team won its first true home match of the season, defeating Appalachian State by the final score of 5-2 at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex. Following the win, the Bucs improved to 2-6 on the season and have now snapped a three-match slide.


Men’s Tennis to Host Mountaineers on Sunday

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 14, 2020) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis squad will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 16 when the Bucs host Appalachian State at 11 a.m. The match is currently set to be played at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex, but may be moved to the Bristol Racquet Club due to impending weather. Both squads enter the match with one win apiece, searching for the second win of the season.


Bucs Drop Home Opener to Rams

BRISTOL, Tenn. (Feb. 9, 2020) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis squad opened up its home schedule on Sunday, hosting the VCU Rams at the Bristol Racquet Club in Bristol, Tenn. The Bucs dropped the home opener, 4-2, slipping to 1-6 overall in the early season.


ETSU Opens Home Slate with VCU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 7, 2020) – After six consecutive matches on the road to start the season, the ETSU Buccaneers Men’s Tennis team will finally compete at home on Sunday, Feb. 9 with a noon start against VCU. The match is currently set to be played at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex on the campus of ETSU, but may be moved to the Bristol Racquet Club due to the severity of the weather this week.


Khamis Brings Home Athlete of the Month

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Feb. 4, 2020) – Just one week following his first collegiate Southern Conference Player of the Week award, Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) claimed another collegiate first. As the league office announced on Monday afternoon, Khamis captured his first SoCon Athlete of the Month award for January.

PROVO, Utah (Feb. 1, 2020) – For the second consecutive day, the ETSU Men’s Tennis team dropped a ranked match in the state of Utah. The Bucs fell to 46th-ranked BYU by the final of 4-3, despite leading 3-1 with three singles matches to play. With the loss, ETSU falls to 1-5 on the season.


Utah Topples Bucs in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Jan. 31, 2020) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team found itself on the wrong side of a 4-1 match on Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City, Utah, falling to the 42nd-ranked Utah Utes. Following the loss, the Bucs fall to 1-4 on the young campaign.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Jan. 30, 2020) – For the third consecutive weekend, the ETSU Men’s Tennis squad will hit the road, this time traveling to Utah for a pair of matches. BOCA RATON, Fla. (Jan. 16, 2020) – For the first time this decade, the ETSU Buccaneers Men’s Tennis squad will take the court. The Bucs are traveling south to Boca Raton, Fla. for a pair of matchups with Florida Atlantic and South Florida. The showdown against FAU will take place at noon on Friday, Jan. 17, while the match against USF will commence at noon on Saturday, Jan. 18.

(Nov. 3, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers men’s tennis team saw its fall season come to a strong conclusion in Birmingham, Ala. as the Bucs claimed one main draw championship and three consolation brackets in the 2019 CCB Invitational. ETSU finished 10-5 in singles play during the three-day event, while recording a 5-1 doubles record.

(Oct. 27, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers men’s tennis team saw its involvement in the ITA Ohio Valley regional come to an end in the quarterfinals in Nashville, Tenn. on Sunday afternoon. Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) dropped matches in their respective quarterfinal draws.


Pair of Buccaneers Advance in ITA Regional

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 26, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers men’s tennis team saw two players reach their respective quarterfinals rounds as Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) finished 2-0 on the day to advance in the main draw and consolation bracket. Rengifo finished 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the main draw, while Lugo won two sets to advance to the consolation draw quarterfinals.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 25, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers Men’s Tennis team competed in day two of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional in Nashville, Tenn. on the campus of Vanderbilt. The Bucs secured four singles wins, with three victories coming in the Round of 64.


Bucs Successful in Day One of ITA Regionals

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 24, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers Men’s Tennis team kick started the 2019 ITA Ohio Valley Regionals with two rounds of doubles action before heading into singles play. The Bucs received a boost in doubles play from Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia), finishing 2-0 and advancing to the doubles quarterfinals.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 23, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers will take part in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional tournament in Nashville, Tenn. beginning on Thursday, Oct. 24. The tournament will be hosted by Vanderbilt and will run from Oct. 24-28 and will be played on two different venues: Currey Tennis Center (Vanderbilt) and the Centennial Sportsplex. Badra Claims C Singles Championship at Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 13, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers Men’s Tennis team capped off the 2019 Louisville Invitational with a singles championship from Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela). The Bucs concluded the event with 11 singles wins and three doubles victories, with four of the singles wins coming from Badra as he claimed the C Singles Draw Championship.


ETSU to Travel to Louisville Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 10, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers Men’s Tennis team will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Louisville, Ky. for the 2019 Louisville Invitational. The Bucs will be traveling six of the seven members on the roster, with Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) being the lone Buccaneer not making the trip.


Rengifo Splits Results in ITA All-American Qualifiers

TULSA, Okla. (Oct. 8, 2019) – The ETSU Buccaneers Men’s Tennis team sent Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Columbia) to Tulsa, Okla. to take part in the 2019 ITA All-American Championship. Rengifo began his tournament in the ITA All-American Qualifiers that began on Oct. 7.

TULSA, Okla. (Oct. 6, 2019) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team will send Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) to Tulsa, Okla. this week to take part in the ITA All-American Championships hosted by Tulsa. The event started on Saturday, Oct. 5 with the pre-qualifying rounds.


Bucs Cap off Gamecock Fall Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Sept. 22, 2019) – The second fall tournament of the season came to a conclusion on Sunday in Columbia, S.C. as the Bucs capped off the Gamecock Fall Invitational. The Bucs sent Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Columbia) and Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) to compete in the Gamecock Fall Invitational.

Juan Lugo to Play in Davis Cup

DORAL, Fla. (Sept. 13, 2019) – ETSU Men’s Tennis very own Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) will be representing Team Venezuela in the 2019 Davis Cup. The event will begin on Saturday, Sept. 14 with Venezuela taking on Ecuador in Doral, Fla.


Bucs Open Fall Slate in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Sept. 12, 2019) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team will get its first taste of action this weekend as the Bucs travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. tomorrow to take part in the Chattanooga Collegiate Clay Court Championships (5C’s). The tournament will run from Friday, Sept. 13 – Sunday, Sept. 15.

ETSU Athletics announces partnership with bioPURE

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 6, 2019) -- bioPURE Services announced on Tuesday that East Tennessee State University Athletics recently became a bioPURE Certified TMathletic facility. This certification means that ETSU athletes will experience a higher level of clean and disinfection in high-use locations like the weight room and the various locker rooms throughout the athletic complex.


Success of Sander Gille Continues

BASTAD, Sweden (July 23, 2019) – Just a few weeks after notching his first doubles win in his Wimbledon debut, former ETSU great Sander Gille (Hasselt, Belgium) lifted the trophy following his first ATP Doubles Championship in the Swedish Open in Bastad, Sweden.


ITA Announces 2019 All-Academic Scholar Athletes

TEMPE, Ariz. (July 23, 2019) – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has announced its 2019 All-Academic teams and Scholar Athletes. The Buccaneers were one of four Southern Conference men’s tennis teams to achieve All-Academic Team status as the Blue & Gold represented eight of the 26 SoCon competitors on the ITA Scholar Athletes list.
