SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Jan. 31, 2020) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team found itself on the wrong side of a 4-1 match on Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City, Utah, falling to the 42nd-ranked Utah Utes. Following the loss, the Bucs fall to 1-4 on the young campaign.
Utah claimed the doubles point by capturing the top two doubles positions, 6-4 in the No. 1 slot and 6-3 in the second doubles matchup. ETSU’s Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) were ahead 5-1 in their doubles match, but were unable to finish following the clinching of the doubles point.
Este evened the score from the No. 6 singles position after a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Paul McCallie. The Venezuela native’s win was the only point captured by the Blue & Gold. With his win, Este improves to 3-1 on the season in singles play.
Utah reclaimed the lead from the No. 5 singles slot as Wally Thayne upended Dylan Bednarczyk (Ontario, Canada) in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(3). Following a 6-4, 7-6(3) win from the No. 4 singles slot that extended the Utah lead to 3-1, Slava Shainyan closed out the match for the home squad with a three-set victory over Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela). Lugo fended off Shainyan in the first set, 7-6(4), but could not keep the momentum, falling 6-4, 6-3 in the final two sets.
ETSU’s Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) forced their respective matches into three sets, each winning the second set. Khamis dropped the first set, 7-6(4), but regained composure to win the second set 6-3 and force a third. The Egypt native was leading 4-3 in the final set when the match was halted. Following a 7-6(4) loss of his own in the first set, Rengifo battled to win the second set 7-6(3). The Colombian junior was trailing 5-2 when his match ended.
