MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Feb. 23, 2020) – Following the Southern Conference opening win over Samford (6-1), the ETSU Men’s Tennis team decided to stay an extra night to take on Alabama State in Montgomery, Ala. The Bucs went into Montgomery and came out victorious for the third consecutive match, defeating the Hornets by the final score of 5-0.
The Bucs laid claim to the doubles point, winning in both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Dylan Bednarczyk (Ontario, Canada) moved up to play the No. 1 position in doubles and did not disappoint, earning a 6-2 win over Chris Andre and Juan Rodriguez. Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) sealed the point with a 7-5 win over Alex-Antoine Marquis and Luka Markovic.
Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) doubled the ETSU lead to 2-0 with a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 win over Andre in the top singles position, claiming his sixth singles win of the season. Badra pulled the Bucs within one point of clinching the contest with a 6-2, 6-2 dominating performance over Marquis in the No. 3 hole.
The match was clinched from the ETSU freshman, Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) after he upended Rodriguez in the No. 4 singles slot, 6-2, 6-1.
The final point came from Este who picked up his sixth singles victory of the campaign with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Markovic in the No. 5 position.
The Bucs will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 29 against Charlotte at 1 p.m. The following day, ETSU will host UNCG in its second SoCon tilt at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex. Sunday’s match against the Spartans is also set for 1 p.m.
