Bucs down Spartans for fifth consecutive win

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 1, 2020) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team won its fifth consecutive match with a third consecutive shutout, defeating UNCG by the final score of 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex in Johnson City, Tenn. With the win, the Bucs improved to 6-6 on the season and remain undefeated in league play with a 2-0 record.

The two teams traded blows in the first two doubles matches with the Bucs’ Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) kicking things off with a 6-4 win in the No. 2 doubles spot. Following a 6-4 defeat in the No. 3 spot, the Bucs captured the doubles point with a narrow 7-6(6) victory in the top doubles spot as Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) and Chris Mikrovas (Athens, Greece) clinched the point for the Bucs.

From that point on, it was all ETSU as the Bucs swept through singles action with six consecutive wins. The first singles win was provided by Khamis out of the top singles slot, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ollie Palmer. The ETSU lead was extended to 3-0 from the No. 3 position after Lugo dismantled his opponent, Nico Grewe, by the score of 6-0, 6-2.

The Bucs clinched the match from the No. 4 singles position as Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) corralled a 6-2, 6-0 win over Roger Rogowski for his seventh win of the season.

With the match in hand, ETSU won the final three singles battles, including a pair of three-set victories over the Spartans.
