Coach Stiegwardt signs top junior in Venezuela

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 25, 2020) – ETSU Men’s Tennis Head Coach Martin Stiegwardt happily announces the signing of Francisco Lamas to a national letter of intent. Lamas signed the letter of intent on March 10, prior to the NCAA shutting down all in-person recruiting. Lamas will join the program in the fall of 2020.

Lamas will arrive to Johnson City, Tenn. as a highly decorated junior tennis player from Maracay, Venezuela, where current ETSU teammates Dimitri Badra and Juan Lugo reside. Lamas is currently ranked as the No. 280 junior in all of the ITF rankings, while holding the top junior ranking in the country of Venezuela. The Venezuela native is off to a strong 2020 season, reaching the El Salvador Finals in singles play and advancing to the second round in doubles action.

Lamas has held the No. 1 ranking in Venezuela for his age group in 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2013. In 2017, Lamas was also ranked as the No. 2 under-14 player in all of South America.

During the 2019 season, Lamas reached four doubles finals in six events, winning two of the four titles in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Lamas also earned a pair of singles championships in Santo Domingo, while reaching the Ecuador and Venezuela singles semifinals.

In 2017, he was chosen to represent Venezuela in the South American Tennis Team Competition and the South American of 16-and-under that was played in Colombia. Both events were World Cup qualifiers, proving Lamas competes at a high level. That same year, he competed for the 14-and-under European Tour where he was the singles champion and doubles champion in Belgium, while also claiming doubles champion in Holland and Germany.

Lamas rose to high South America rankings thanks in large part to his 2016 circuit in which he won the Uruguay Bowl in singles and doubles, while also winning doubles in Argentina and reaching the doubles finals in Chile.
