MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Oct. 1, 2020) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team is set to compete in the 2020 Dale Short Shootout in Murfreesboro, Tenn., marking the 2020-21 season debut for the Bucs. The tournament will be played at the Adams Tennis Complex beginning on Friday, Oct. 2 and ending Sunday, Oct. 4.
The Bucs will be joined by host Middle Tennessee State, as well as Chattanooga and Troy. Play will commence at 11 a.m. (ET) each day and will be a blind draw with ETSU squaring off head-to-head against one different team each day.
ETSU returns seven players from last year’s squad, including veterans: Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela), Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt), Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia). The Bucs also bring back Dimitra Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) who emerged on the scene last year with a team-best eight singles wins as a freshman. Badra began the season 0-4 in singles play before rattling off eight consecutive victories.
In addition, the Bucs welcome Appalachian State transfer Milo Bargeron (Chislehurst, England) and top Ecuador junior player Juan Sebastian Zabala (Ecuador).
ETSU will be sending Badra, Bargeron, Dylan Bednarczyk (Woodbridge, Ontario), Este, Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Rengifo and Zabala to Murfreesboro for this weekend’s competition.
The Bucs are coming off a shortened season in which they finished 7-6 on the year, including knocking off then No. 33 Penn State (4-2) and No. 46 Clemson (4-1). ETSU finished the year on a six-match winning streak and was a perfect 2-0 in Southern Conference play.
