Bucs square off with Vols at 1 p.m. in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 18, 2021) – The season is finally here for the ETSU Men’s Tennis team and it has already changed. ETSU will now be traveling to Knoxville, Tenn. for a 1 p.m. showdown against the Vols on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The Bucs were originally set to take on Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. However, due to COVID-19 concerns within the Wake Forest Men’s Tennis team, the Bucs had to call in the last-minute change of schedule.

About the Bucs
The Bucs are taking the court in their first dual match since March 7, 2020 when ETSU toppled then-ranked No. 46 Clemson by the final score of 4-1. Prior to the shutdown of the 2020 season, ETSU had claimed six consecutive wins, including three shutout victories. The Bucs ran their record to 7-6 overall prior to the season coming to a halt.

The Bucs returned a loaded roster from 2020, while also adding a handful of talent. Headlining the returners are: Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela), Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt), Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) and Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia). ETSU also looks to gain a lot of wins from Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) who had a strong end to the 2020 season.

ETSU returns all 39 singles wins from last season as well as 13 of the 17 doubles victories.

Topping Tennessee
The Volunteers enter the match as the 13th-ranked squad in the latest ITA rankings and are already 2-0 on the young campaign. Tennessee kicked off the season with a doubleheader victory on Saturday, Jan. 16, toppling both Oklahoma (5-2) and Tennessee Tech (7-0).

Tennessee finished the shortened 2020 season with a 14-2 overall mark, registering nine shutout victories prior to COVID-19 cancelling the remainder of the year.

Adam Walton returns as the Volunteers’ top-ranked player, concluding the 2020 season ranked 31st in the ITA standings. Walton finished 6-2 in singles play in the fall, but did not appear in the doubleheader match against the Sooners and Golden Eagles.
