KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 19, 2021) – It was a much-anticipated dual match for the ETSU Men’s Tennis team, their first since March 7, 2020. However, the Bucs will have to wait another match to see their first victory of the new season as the 13th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers toppled ETSU by the final of 7-0 in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Volunteers claimed the first doubles match out of the top doubles position, winning 6-2. Following the setback, ETSU notched its first doubles contest of the season as Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) and Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) secured a 6-3 win out of the No. 3 doubles slot. Tennessee claimed the doubles point moments later with a 6-3 triumph in the No. 2 doubles position, taking the early 1-0 lead.
The Bucs could not muster any momentum in singles play, falling in five of the six matches in straight sets. The Vols claimed the match from the top singles position as Johannus Monday fended off Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) 6-4, 6-1.
The lone set win for the Blue & Gold came from Pernas out of the No. 6 slot as he went toe-to-toe with Joel Gamerov. The Argentina sophomore dropped the first set 6-4 before rebounding for a lopsided 6-1 win in the second set. With the match already clinched, the duo played a super tiebreak with Gamerov coming out on top, 10-5.
The Bucs are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 24 when ETSU travels to Lexington, Ky. for a 1 p.m. showdown against No. 25 Kentucky.
