Bucs Turn Sights on Second Consecutive Ranked Opponent

ETSU to face No. 25 Kentucky on Sunday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 22, 2021) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 24 as the Bucs search for a marquee program win over No. 25 Kentucky. The match will commence at 1 p.m. in Lexington, Ky. at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.

 About the Bucs
ETSU is coming off a 7-0 defeat against No. 13 Tennessee on Jan. 19 in Knoxville, Tenn. in the season opener for the Blue & Gold. The Bucs are aiming to avoid a second consecutive 0-2 start to the season with the matchup against the Wildcats this Sunday.

Despite the sweep in the opening match, the Bucs saw some bright spots in the contest. Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) and Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) provided a doubles spark with a 6-3 win in the No. 3 position. In addition, Pernas extended his singles match into a third set before falling in the super tiebreak (4-6, 6-1, 5-10).

What about the Wildcats
The Wildcats will be jump starting their season on Saturday with a doubleheader against Illinois State in Lexington, Ky., beginning at 10 a.m. Kentucky enters the match ranked No. 25 in the latest ITA rankings after posting a 12-5 overall record in 2020 prior to the athletic shutdown.

Kentucky returns a handful of talent while adding some key players. Liam Draxl returns as the highest-rated singles player, coming in at No. 45. Draxl is joined in the Top 125 by Alexandre Leblanc (No. 114) and Joshua Lapadat (No. 123). In addition, Lapadat is ranked as the No. 7 Newcomer to Watch according to the ITA preseason watch list.
