DURHAM, N.C. (Feb. 12, 2021) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team dropped its fourth consecutive match to start the season, this time falling in a 5-2 decision at Duke on Friday afternoon. The match was played at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
The Bucs got off to a strong start, claiming the doubles point away from the Blue Devils. The doubles tandem of Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Juan Sebastian Zabala (Guayaquil, Ecuador) started ETSU on the right note with a 6-4 victory in the No. 3 slot. Following their win, Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) and Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) earned a 6-4 win of their own in the top doubles spot to boost the Bucs ahead, 1-0.
The Bucs could not maintain the momentum into singles play as the host Blue Devils rallied off five consecutive straight-set victories to take the clinching 5-1 advantage. Duke clinched the match from the No. 1 singles position as Garrett Johns upended Rengifo, 7-5, 6-1.
The lone ETSU singles win was provided by Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) who earned his third singles win of the campaign. Badra claimed the first set in the No. 2 slot, besting Edu Guell by the final of 7-6(4). The redshirt sophomore then dropped the second set, 6-3. With the match in hand, the final singles battle went into a super tiebreaker with Badra coming out on top, 10-4.
The Bucs will return to action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. when ETSU takes on No. 14 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
