GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 28, 2021) – For the first time this season, the ETSU Buccaneers Men’s Tennis walked away victorious following a 4-3 triumph over UNCG in ETSU’s Southern Conference opener. With the win, the Bucs improve to 1-5 overall, while UNCG drops to 0-4 on the year and 0-2 in league action.
The Spartans claimed the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles slot. Meanwhile, the Bucs picked up a 6-4 win in the final doubles match with Juan Sebastian Zabala (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) earning the victory.
The Bucs pulled even in the match with a singles win in the No. 4 slot as Thiago Pernas (Buenos Airees, Argentina) bested Roger Rogowski in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The Spartans reclaimed the advantage with a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory in the No. 3 slot with Nico Grewe earning the victory to push UNCG ahead, 2-1.
From that point, the Buccaneers began to roll. ETSU laid claim to three consecutive singles matches, including the match-clinching win. The spurt began with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 win by Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) in the top singles position. Shortly after Badra’s win, Zabala earned a three-set triumph over Cooper Wyett (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) in the No. 6 position. The Bucs secured the match from veteran competitor, Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia). Rengifo pulled away victorious in a three-set match, besting Ollie Palmer by the score of 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3.
With the match in hand, the Bucs dropped the final battle from the No. 5 singles position as Alexander Zuckerman upended Dylan Bednarczyk (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
The Bucs will be back in action on Tuesday, March 9 when ETSU plays host to Radford at 2 p.m. The battle with the Highlanders will serve as ETSU’s home opener for the 2021 campaign.
