Five singles matches decided in three sets

ATLANTA, Ga. (March 19, 2021) – The ETSU men’s tennis team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end in Atlanta, Ga. as the Bucs dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to Georgia State, falling to 4-6 on the campaign. With the win, the Panthers improved to 6-5 on the season.

The Panthers claimed the doubles point, winning both matches in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. The Bucs led 5-4 in the top doubles position but the match went unfinished following the clinching of the point.

ETSU evened the match at one apiece as Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) continued his red-hot scorching play with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 2 singles slot over Andrei Duarte.

Following the Panthers reclaiming the lead in the fifth singles spot, ETSU picked up another win to draw even. This time the Bucs earned a win from the No. 6 slot as Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) bested Patrick Lazo, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

The Bucs could not gain the lead as Georgia State picked up another three-set victory, this time in the No. 3 slot with Harvey Maughan defeating Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina), 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

ETSU successfully drew even for the third time in the match with Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) extending his team-high win total to seven victories in singles play after a 7-5(5), 4-6, 6-3 win in the top slot over Vazha Shubladze.

ETSU was unable to hold on to the victory in the No. 4 spot, despite claiming the first set 7-6,(4). Georgia State’s Mihai Marinescu was able to fend off Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) in the final two sets, earning 7-5, 6-3 victories to put the Panthers on top with the 4-3 victory.
