MACON, Ga. (March 20, 2021) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team put itself back on track on Saturday with a 6-1 win over Mercer in Macon, Ga. With the Southern Conference win over the Bears, the Bucs improved to 5-6 (3-0 SoCon), while Mercer dropped to 3-11 (1-1 SoCon).
ETSU came away with two of the three doubles matches wins, claiming the victory in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. The Bucs clinched the doubles point out of the two spot with Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Juan Sebastian Zabala (Guayaquil, Ecuador) earning a 7-5 victory over Samuel Macleod and Andrew Branicki.
From that point on, it was all ETSU as the Bucs captured five of the six singles wins, beginning with a straight-set 6-0, 6-1 win from Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) over Lucas Wayenburg in the top singles spot to put the Bucs on top, 2-0.
Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) captured the 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 4 singles slot over David Georgadze, while Pernas clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Carver Arant in the No. 3 position.
With the match in hand, ETSU won two of the final three singles battles, including Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) who extended his team-high winning streak to six matches with a 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (8) victory over Hugo Lobo in the two spot.
ETSU is back in action on Friday, March 26 as the Bucs will play host to Furman at 2 p.m. at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex. ETSU will then welcome Samford into town two days later on Sunday, March 28 at 11 a.m.
