ELON, N.C. (April 11, 2021) – It was another dominating performance by the ETSU Men’s Tennis team as the squad won its sixth consecutive match, this time with a 5-2 victory over Elon on Sunday afternoon in Elon, N.C. With the win, ETSU improves to 10-6 on the season, while Elon falls to 11-5.
The Phoenix started the match off claiming the doubles point, winning in the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. ETSU’s lone doubles win came from Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) as the duo claimed the 6-3 triumph in the No. 3 slot.
The Bucs did not fret, quickly gaining momentum in singles play by winning five of the six first sets. Este put the Blue & Gold on the board with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Luke Queiroz in the No. 6 position. The Bucs then claimed the lead for good when Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) won his ninth singles match of the year with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Nicholas Condos.
ETSU pulled within one of the victory from the No. 1 slot with 57th-ranked Badra cruising through Akram El Sallaly, 6-3, 6-1.
Elon cut the deficit to 3-2 out of the No. 5 position, however it did not matter as the Bucs won the final two outings for the comfortable 5-2 victory. The match was clinched from the No. 4 position with Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) winning 6-3, 6-2 over Chung-Han Tsai. Juan Lugo (Maracay, Venezuela) put the match away with a three-set victory over Camilo Ponce, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Bucs will hit the road one final time during the regular season with a neutral-site contest against Old Dominion on Wednesday, April 14 in Charlotte, N.C. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
