Charlotte, N.C. (April 14, 2021) – Competing in the final non-conference battle of the season, the ETSU Men’s Tennis squad dropped a 4-1 decision to Old Dominion in a neutral-site showdown in Charlotte, N.C. With the loss, ETSU falls to 10-7 with one match remaining.
The Monarchs claimed the doubles point as each match came down to the wire. Old Dominion won the point with wins in the No. 1 slot (7-6(4)) and the No. 3 position (7-6(2)). ETSU’s lone double win came from the No. 2 slot with Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) and Miguel Este (Caracas, Venezuela) earning a 7-6(4) triumph.
The Monarchs captured the first two singles matches, pulling one point away from closing the contest. Old Dominion captured a pair of straight-set wins in the No. 4 and No. 3 positions for the 3-0 advantage.
ETSU’s lone point came from the No. 2 position as veteran Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) bested Luca Maldoner, 6-2, 7-5.
The Monarchs put the match away with a thrilling 7-6(13-11), 6-1 win in the No. 5 position, securing the 4-1 advantage.
ETSU will return home for one final match on Sunday, April 18 as the Bucs play host to Samford in a critical Southern Conference showdown at 1 p.m.
