JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 26, 2021) – Just days after the ETSU Men’s Tennis squad claimed the Southern Conference title, head coach Martin Stiegwardt has announced the transfer of a key competitor to the Buccaneer program for next season.
Fellow SoCon student-athlete Hugo Lobo (Toulon, France) will be transferring from Mercer to join the Bucs in the fall season. Lobo is currently a senior with the Bears, transferring to Macon, Ga. from Seward County CC prior to the 2019-20 season.
“We’re very excited with the signing of Hugo to join us next fall,” stated Coach Stiegwardt. “He brings a lot of experience having already competed for three years and also within the SoCon. He’s a great player not only in singles but in doubles as well and will be a great asset in trying to retain our SoCon titles. He will fit right into our program and his passion for tennis and competition is unmatched. He keeps wanting to get better and he will have a great opportunity here at ETSU.”
The France native finished 11-13 this season in singles play, primarily competing in the top singles slot. Lobo posted a 6-11 mark in the No. 1 position. In fact, the soon-to-be Buccaneer took down the SoCon’s Player/Freshman of the Year Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) in the SoCon Semifinals match in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Lobo was also competitive in doubles play, finishing 9-13, including 8-13 at the top doubles slot. The France native is expected to bring experience in doubles and singles play, adding to an already heavy ETSU lineup.
