Badra to compete in singles competition, May 23-28

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 4, 2021) – Just one day after learning that he and the rest of the Bucs will be heading to Georgia for the opening round of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship, ETSU redshirt-freshman Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) received another invitation. The reigning Southern Conference Freshman/Player of the Year earned the SoCon’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Singles Championship. The championship will run from May 23-28, while the team championship will take place May 17-22. Both championships will be played at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.

Badra is the first ETSU singles player to receive the invitation since David Biosca (Sant Fruitos de Bage, Spain) did so in 2017. Biosca advanced to the round of 32 following a win over Virginia’s Collin Altamirano. Badra led the Bucs all season long and holds a singles mark of 14-5 this year, including 11-3 when playing in the top singles spot. In his last 10 matches, the Venezuela native is 7-2 in singles matches with one match going unfinished.

All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a 7-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.

Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have results for a minimum of six matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
