Badra representing Venezuela; Gille to play for Belgium

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 17, 2021) – With the ETSU Men’s Tennis team gearing up for fall action this weekend, current Buccaneer Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) and former Buccaneer great Sander Gille (Kuringen, Belgium) will be representing their countries in the Davis Cup.

The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis and is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. It is described by the organizers as the "World Cup of Tennis", and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team.

Badra will be competing in the World Group II stage, squaring off against South Africa. The match between Venezuela and South Africa will begin on Saturday, Sept. 18 and will conclude Sunday, Sept. 19. The match will be played at Forest Hills Stadium in New York. Gille will be representing Belgium, the top seed in the World Group I stage. Belgium will be going toe-to-toe with Bolivia on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Rakiura Resort in Asunción, Paraguay. For live results between Belgium and Bolivia, click here.

For each group, the eight highest-ranked winners will automatically progress to the 2022 Qualifiers, while the four lowest-ranked winners will take part in an additional knock-out tie in November. The two winners of the knock-out tie will progress to the 2022 Qualifiers and the two remaining losers will compete in an additional playoff.
