KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 12, 2022) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team opened the 2022 Spring campaign on Wednesday with a doubleheader in Knoxville, Tenn. The Bucs suffered 7-0 and 4-0 losses to the 4th-ranked Volunteers.
Tennessee claimed nine singles matches between the two showdowns and led in the remaining three matches that would go unfinished in the second battle. The Volunteers also captured four doubles victories to secure the two points, and led in the remaining two doubles matches that went unfinished.
The Bucs’ closest result in the opening match came in the No. 2 singles position as Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) dropped a 6-3 decision in the first set and was trailing 5-4 in the second. However, Rengifo had to retire from the match, resulting in the season-opening loss for the senior.
In the second match, Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) led in the second set, 4-3, before the match was called following the 4-0 advantage for the Volunteers.
The Bucs will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 23 when ETSU travels to Clemson, S.C. to take on the Tigers at noon.
