ETSU wins second consecutive 6-1 decision

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Feb. 11, 2022) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis squad is no stranger to taking down Power 5 opponents and that was evident this evening as the Bucs dominated Indiana by the final score of 6-1. The match was played in Bloomington, Ind. and resulted in ETSU’s second consecutive 6-1 triumph.

For the second straight match, the Bucs captured the doubles point after winning two of three matches. The Hoosiers claimed the top doubles match but ETSU rebounded with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) bested Jagger Saylor and Patrick Fletchall by the tally of 6-4 to even the battle for the doubles point at 1-1. The Venezuela duo of Francisco Lamas (Maracay, Venezuela) and Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) secured the doubles point with a 7-5 win in the No. 2 position over Ilya Tiraspolsky and Luka Vukovic.

Badra immediately turned around to take down Fletchall in the No. 2 singles position in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to double the Buccaneer lead to 2-0. Immediately following Badra’s win, Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) put away Tiraspolsky in the No. 3 singles spot, 6-1, 6-3 to pull ETSU within one of clinching the match.

The victory was sealed by the hands of Juan Sebastian Zabala (Guayaquil, Ecuador) with a strong 7-5, 6-1 victory over Saylor in the No. 6 singles position, putting the Bucs on top by the count of 4-0 with three singles matches remaining.

Just for good measure, the Blue & Gold put away a pair of straight-set victories in two of the final three matches. Khamis picked up his first win of the spring with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Carson Haskins in the top singles position, while Pernas bested Vikash Singh in the No. 5 slot, 7-5, 6-4.

ETSU will return to action on Friday, Feb. 18 when the Bucs travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to take part in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions.
