CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Feb. 19, 2022) – The ETSU Men’s Tennis team secured third place in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Bucs concluded the tournament with a 4-2 win over Troy on Saturday afternoon.
ETSU captured the doubles point yet again, taking the early 1-0 advantage. Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) and Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) claimed the 6-1 win in the No. 3 slot, while Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) and Francisco Lamas (Maracay, Venezuela) captured a 6-4 victory in the No. 2 doubles position to secure the point.
Troy retaliated with two singles wins to begin singles competition, taking an early 2-1 advantage over the Blue & Gold.
The Bucs drew even for the match after Hugo Lobo (Toulon, France) earned a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory in the No. 5 position over Manuel Bernard. ETSU jumped ahead for good after Juan Sebastian Zabala (Guayaquil, Ecuador) bested Vito Llinares in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 6 slot for the 3-2 lead.
The match was clinched by Mr. Clutch himself out of the No. 3 slot as Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) upended Nicolas Simkin in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
ETSU is back in action on Feb. 26 when the Bucs travel to Birmingham, Ala. for a pair of matches. The Bucs will kick off the weekend against UAB before taking on Samford on Sunday, Feb. 27 in the Southern Conference opener.
