BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 27, 2022) – ETSU Men’s Tennis kicked off Southern Conference action with a 5-2 victory over Samford in Birmingham, Ala. on Sunday afternoon.
For the seventh consecutive match, the Bucs captured the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. ETSU earned a pair of 6-3 victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to secure the 1-0 lead over the host Bulldogs.
ETSU claimed four of the six singles matches, securing the 5-2 victory in Birmingham. The Blue & Gold earned a trio of straight-set victories in the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 position. Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) bested Yerrassyl Murat, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 4 position, while Juan Sebastian Zabala (Guayaquil, Ecuador) earned a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over J.B. Pickard in the No. 5 slot. Juan Jose Vargas (North Santander, Colombia) captured his first career dual-match singles win in the No. 6 slot with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Harrison Williams.
The final singles win for the Bucs belonged to Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) with a three-set thriller in the No. 1 slot over Jim Hendrikx, winning 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
ETSU will be back in action on Friday, March 4 when the Bucs host Wofford in the SoCon home opener at 2:30 p.m.
