ETSU to host Pair of Non-Conference Matches

Bucs to welcome both Lipscomb and Gardner-Webb

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 10, 2022) – ETSU Men’s Tennis will put its five-match winning streak to the test this weekend by welcoming Lipscomb and Gardner-Webb into town for a pair of non-conference matches. The Bucs will take on Lipscomb at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and play host to the Runnin’ Bulldogs on Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m. Both matches are set to be played at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.

About the Bucs
ETSU enters the weekend ranked 73rd in the latest ITA Top 75 rankings after winning its fifth consecutive match to improve to 8-4 on the campaign. Six different Buccaneers have a singles record of .500 or better, led by Juan Sebastian Zabala (Guayaquil, Ecuador) with an 8-1 record in dual matches. Zabala has done most of his damage from the No. 5 slot with a 5-1 record. As a team, the Bucs are 37-27 in singles play this spring, including the veteran competitor Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) holding a 7-3 mark on the season.

Doubles play has vastly improved for the Buccaneers as ETSU is now 19-11 in doubles matches this spring, having won nine consecutive doubles points. Rengifo and Zabala hold the best doubles record at 4-2, all coming at the No. 1 doubles slot. Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) and Francisco Lamas (Maracay, Venezuela) are 4-0 as a tandem this season.

Beating the Bison
Lipscomb is 3-6 on the season, having dropped three consecutive matches. The Bison are 0-2 against the Southern Conference this year, dropping a 6-1 decision to Furman and a 4-3 loss to Chattanooga. Lipscomb is 0-3 this season in true road matches.

Getting to Know Gardner-Webb
Gardner-Webb is 8-7 on the campaign, including 3-6 in true road matches this season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs are 2-0 this season against the SoCon, winning a pair of 5-2 matches over both Wofford and UNCG.

Gardner-Webb is led by Alex Lepine with a 10-3 record in singles action, followed by Eduardo Dias with a 9-3 mark in singles play. The Runnin’ Bulldogs are 48-40 on the year in singles play and 20-21 in doubles action.
