JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 17, 2022) – The 74th-ranked ETSU Men’s Tennis team closed out the 2022 regular season in style, with a lopsided 7-0 victory over The Citadel. With the win, the Buccaneers close the regular season with a 17-6 overall record and a perfect 7-0 mark in league play for the third consecutive year.
The doubles point was never in doubt with the Bucs cruising in all three doubles matches. Francisco Lamas (Maracay, Venezuela) and Thiago Pernas (Buenos Aires, Argentina) began the match with a convincing 6-0 win over Bradey Minnich and Josh Wallen in the No. 3 position. Immediately after, the tandem of Frazier Rengifo (Cali, Colombia) and Juan Sebastian Zabala (Guayaquil, Ecuador) clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Everett Barkley and Lucas Robins in the top doubles position. With the Bucs ahead 1-0, Dimitri Badra (Maracay, Venezuela) and Yusuf Khamis (Cairo, Egypt) secured a 6-3 doubles win for good measure.
ETSU dominated in singles action, winning all six matches in straight sets beginning with Hugo Lobo’s (Toulon, France) 6-0, 6-1 win over Barkley in the No. 5 position for the 2-0 advantage. Zabala notched his team-leading 16th singles win with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Minnich in the No. 3 slot to pull the Blue & Gold to within one point of clinching yet another perfect Southern Conference slate.
For the first time in his collegiate career, Lamas clinched the match for ETSU with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 4 position over Will Bush. Lamas’ win gave the Bucs the 4-0 advantage and was his fifth singles win of the season.
Juan Lombisano (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Badra and Pernas each topped off their straight-set wins to secure the 7-0 victory for the Bucs.
ETSU will kick off the 2022 SoCon Men’s Tennis Championship on Thursday, April 21 at 1 p.m. against the same Bulldogs squad that the Bucs took care of today. The tournament will be played at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
