Four Bucs have perfect 4.0 GPAs; 20 Bucs post GPAs above 3.8

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (July 26, 2022) – With the Southern Conference announcing its Academic All-Conference selections on Tuesday, ETSU placed 66 student-athletes on the prestigious teams.

Each of the SoCon’s 10 full-time institutions had at least 37 honorees this year, representing the sports of men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, rifle, wrestling, men’s and women’s golf, men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball and softball.

To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the spring semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.

A SoCon spring-record 55 student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs, with Emilia Alfaro (Azul, Argentina), MacKenzie Dyson (Hanahan, S.C.), Josh Krafsur (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Andrea Sarhatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) making up the group of Buccaneers with perfect GPAs.

As a group, ETSU’s 66 student-athletes ranked second-most among the group of SoCon schools. Twenty Buccaneers had GPAs of 3.8 or higher and 51 had GPAs above a 3.50.

Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field combined for 28 selections – 14 for each – while Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field combined for 11 student-athletes on the all-conference list. Overall, the league’s 10 women’s outdoor track and field teams led the way with 81 academic all-conference selections, while the nine women’s indoor track and field programs combined for 72.

ETSU Baseball had eight selections, softball recorded seven representatives, women’s tennis with four, men’s golf and men’s tennis each had three, and both men’s and women’s basketball had one.

The 637 total spring selections are second only to the 742 from the spring of 2020, when participation requirements were relaxed and some schools instituted measures of academic relief due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With league competition in 2020-21 occurring mostly in the second semester, the league named just one team for that academic year instead of naming fall and spring squads as usual.
