ETSU Runners Turn In Strong Times At Florida Relays

Gainesville, Fla. (Mar. 28, 2002) - East Tennessee State's track team turned in some strong efforts tonight at the 59th edition of the Florida Relays in the Distance Carnival portion of the event. In the women's steeplechase sophomore Emily Chaney (Marysville, Tenn.) competed in the event for the first time this season, coming in fourth in a time of 11:34.31. In the men's race sophomore David Haefner (Hamburg, N.Y.) bettered his previous best this season by almost 12 seconds with a 9:20.64 effort, good for sixth in a field of 14 runners. In the final race of the evening, freshman James Grufferty (Galnmire, Ireland) had the best showing of the day for the Bucs, taking second-place in the 5,000-meter run. His time of 14:49.40 was 3.40 seconds behind the winning time set by Will Wyche of Army. More members of the ETSU team's will be in action at the relays on Friday and Saturday.
