Chernikow wraps up competition at Deacon Combined Events

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (March 23, 2007) - The Deacon Combined Events wrapped up competition Friday afternoon at Kentner Stadium, and freshman Nicolas Chernikow (Seymour, Tenn.) finished 14th overall in the decathlon.

 

The athletes began the day competing in the 110-meter hurdles, and Chernikow ended with a mark of 16.29, resulting in a seventh-place finish and 700 points.

 

The field events were not too kind for the freshman on Friday, as he totaled 742 points. Chernikow tallied 335 points in the discus after a heave of 76-07 (23.34m), and then picked up 407 points in the javelin (123-04).

 

 Back on the track, Chernikow wrapped up the meet with an eighth-place finish in the 1500-meter run. Chernikow ended with a time of 4:48.67, which earned him 627 points.

 

North Carolina's Mateo Sossah won the decathlon as he racked up 7,289 points, while Max Westman (Penn) finished second with 6,884 points and Tar Heel Daniel Keller rounded out the top-three, with 6,866 points. Chernikow ended the two-day event with 5,668 points.

 

          The ETSU track and field team will be back in competition on Wednesday, March 28, when they participate in the Milligan Open.
