MACON, Ga. (Feb. 7, 2007) - For the second consecutive week freshman Jarrod Burton (Bastian, Va.) was named the Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week for his record-breaking performance over the weekend at the Carolina Invitational.
Burton found himself rewriting the ETSU record books for the fifth time this season as he smashed his previous weight throw record of 54-02.50 (16.52m) with a heave of 56-11.25 (17.35m) at the meet on Saturday. Overall, Burton finished sixth with his record-breaking toss. In all four meets this season, the Virginia native has set a new school record in the weight throw event.
Last week Burton became just the second ETSU student-athlete to win the award, and now he becomes the second athlete to win the award in back-to-back weeks, joining Campbell's Lincoln Gordon as he accomplished the feat last season. The math major will now look to continue his success on Thursday night when he competes at the Appalachian Indoor Limited Open.
The Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week is announced every Wednesday during the 2007 indoor track season.
The 12-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, UNF and Stetson with Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate beginning competition in 2007-08.
