Burton named A-Sun ATOW after successful weekend at Niswonger
Wednesday, January 31, 2007

MACON, Ga. (Jan. 31, 2007) -   Freshman Jarrod Burton (Bastian, Va.) was named Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week by the league office on Wednesday after his solid performance at the 2007 Niswonger Invitational this past weekend.

The freshman hurler broke two ETSU throwing records over the weekend as he beat his previous school record on Friday in the weight throw with a toss of 54-02.50 (16.52m). The heave placed him seventh overall in the event, and it was 2 1/2 inches better than his old record.

Burton was not done rewriting the record books as his mark of 52-08.75 (16.07m) in the shot put placed him second overall on Saturday, and it broke a nine-year-old ETSU record that was set by Curtis Eason (50-06) in 1998. The second place finish by Burton was his top overall spot this season in any event.

The award is Burton's first and it marks only the second time a student athlete from ETSU was given the award (James Rainer, Jan. 25, 2006).

The Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week is announced every Wednesday during the 2007 indoor track season.

The 12-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, UNF and Stetson with Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate beginning competition in 2007-08.
