Before arriving on campus at ETSU Brown all ready made a name for himself in the Johnson City community as he led the nation by posting a time of 4:08 in the mile at Science Hill High School. During his time competing at ETSU from 1974-76, Brown made a tremendous impact to both the cross country and track & field squads. He broke six track and field records, and holds the school record in the two-mile event.  He also ran a leg in the school record setting distance medley relay team, which was set in 1976. Brown was named to the 1975 All-Ohio Valley Conference cross country team, and won the 1976 OVC Indoor One Mile Championship as well as the 1976 Distance Medley Relay Championship.
