KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (May 9, 2009) - Senior sprinter Judy Johnson (Knoxville) claimed a regional qualifying mark in the 100m and junior Jordan Briggs (Erwin, Tenn.) set personal bests in both the 110-meter hurdles and long jump, as the Buccaneer track and field team made their final tune up before the Atlantic Sun Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Tennessee Invitational on the Tom Black Track.
Johnson, who all ready set a regional qualifying mark in the 200m back on April 18 at the UNF Osprey Challenge, completed the sweep in the short sprints, as she flew her way to the title in the 100m in her hometown. The Knoxville, Tenn. native won the event with a blistering and ETSU record time of 11.68.
Meanwhile, Briggs enjoyed his final tune up before the Atlantic Sun Championships next weekend in Jacksonville, by setting two personal bests. Briggs was clocked with the fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles (15.98), and the Erwin, Tenn. native also posted the top leap in the long jump (21-01.25).
Junior Terrence Maxwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) also cruised his way to titles in the 100m and 200m. Maxwell recorded a time of 11.43 in the 100m and finished the afternoon with a mark of 23.27. In addition, Mike James (Palm Bay, Fla.) provided a respectable showing in the 400-meter hurdles (56.54).
Back on the women's side, senior Heidi Dahl (Orem, Utah) dominated the field in the 800m. Dahl plastered the field - finishing two seconds faster than the nearest competitor - with a regional qualifying mark of 2:06.44.
"Our goal for the meet was to finish strong before heading into the Atlantic Sun Championships next weekend," added associate coach Michelle Byrne. "We had some solid performances today, but I would have liked to see some better showings in other event areas."
The Buccaneer track and field team returns to action next weekend when ETSU competes at the 2009 Atlantic Sun Championships, which begins Friday, May 15 in Jacksonville.
