LYNCHBURG, Va. (April 29, 2009) - Sophomore Michael James (Palm Bay, Fla.) set a Regional Qualifying Mark in the 110-meter hurdles and junior thrower Jarrod Burton (Bastian, Va.) smashed the ETSU record in the discus, as the Buccaneer track and field team enjoyed a stellar evening at the Liberty Twilight meet, located on the Matthes-Hopkins Track on Thursday evening.

James became the first Buccaneer athlete on the men's side to set a regional qualifying mark by cruising his way to the top of the list in the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles. The sophomore runner won the prelims with a time of 14.27 and finished fifth in the finals.

Meanwhile on the track, Burton was busy setting a new school record in the discus. The Bastian, Va. native already owns the school marks in the shot put and hammer, but the junior took over a third ETSU record by finishing second in the discus with a heave of 158-11 (48.45m). Burton broke Bill Hogan's 34-year-old mark (152-6) with the toss and he also went on to finish second in the shot put (15.57m).

Continuing in the field events, senior jumper Josh Cloyd (Telford, Tenn.) kept his stellar season intact in the long jump. Cloyd won the event by posting a mark of 23-04.50 (7.12m), which was almost a foot longer than Terrence Green's (VMI) - who finished second with a mark of 22-05 (6.83m).

On the women's side, the Lady Buccaneer sprinters posted solid results on the track.

Senior Judy Johnson (Knoxville) and Nae-Nae Bailey (Statesville, N.C.), along with junior Octavia Burgess (Morganton, N.C.) all advanced to the finals in the 100m. Once in the finals, Johnson and Bailey both posted top-five finishes. Johnson was clocked in at 11.78 (third place) and Bailey - who was making her first appearance since the first meet of the outdoor campaign - ended in fifth (11.86). Bailey also dominated in the 200m by finishing second with a time of 24.14. Bailey's time in the 200m was over a full second faster than her previous time set at Milligan in March.

In the field events, junior Zachlynn Blackburn (Tazewell, Va.) capped off the evening with a third-place finish in the weight throw (45.95m).

Senior distance runner Heidi Dahl (Orem, Utah) will be in action this Saturday when she competes out in Stanford.
