Watts pleased with successful first meet
CLEMSON, S.C. (Dec. 1, 2012) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams put together multiple top five performances, highlighted by a second-place effort from junior Ifrish Alberg (Paramaribo, Suriname), on Saturday at Clemson’s Orange and Purple Winter Classic in the Buccaneers’ first meet of the 2012-13 indoor season.
In total, the two sides put together nine personal bests to go along with nine finishes inside their respective event’s top five. Alberg had the best finish, clocking in at 6.82 in the finals of the 60m dash, and nearly winning the event as he finished just .01 behind Georgia Tech’s Perron Jones. The best finish on the women’s side was third, with Demeteria Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) taking bronze in the 60m hurdles (8.51), Emani Harrison (Columbia, S.C.) in the 60m dash (7.62), and Kristin Chapman (Jacksboro, Tenn.) in the high jump (1.55) on a personal best.
“I’m pleased with our first competition of the 2012-13 season,” Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts said. “We had nearly 10 personal bests, along with some other solid performances. The sprint crew posted some very successful times for such an early-season meet. The jumps group is fit, but struggled some today. I have no doubt that they will perform much better in our next competition on January 11. The throwers had several personal bests, as well as some other solid performances. They are a very young group and will continue to get better with experience.”
“We have a long way to go until the conference championship, and we need to remain focused on day-to-day improvements and have a solid month of training over the break.”
The ETSU track and field teams have over a month until their next meet, which comes on Jan. 11 at the Blazer Invite in Birmingham, Ala.
