Scott stands second in heptathlon, Vodova takes third in pentathlon
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Feb. 1, 2013) – Junior Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) marked 12.09m in the women’s triple jump on Friday at the JDL Fast Track, capturing her first gold of the season to highlight the ETSU track & field performances on opening day of the Hilton Garden Invitational.
Burley – the silver medalist in the event two weeks ago at the Niswonger Invitational – made easy work of the competition, beating out Wake Forest’s Montasia Golden by nearly six inches. Golden took second place at 11.94m.
Sophomore Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) and freshman Ashley Kessler (Knoxville, Tenn.) were the other top women’s finishers of the day. Vodova combined for 3,313 points in her first penatathlon of the indoor season to grab bronze in the event. Kessler followed up a good performance at the Niswonger with a collegiate best in the pole vault, clearing 3.40m to take fifth.
On the men’s side, sophomore K’Vonte Scott (Virginia Beach, Va.) sits second in the heptathlon, totaling 2,782 points through the first four events. Fellow classmate Evaristo Valls (Elche, Spain) currently stands in fourth place with 2,615 points. The final three events take place Saturday.
The men’s 5000m run saw ETSU take two top-five finishes, led by Anders Ludvigsen (Odense, Denmark) in fourth with a time of 15:09.68. Senior Landon Milhorn (The Woodlands, Texas) completed the event less than a second behind Ludvigsen, clocking in at 15:10.44 for a personal best.
“We had several good performances to begin the meet,” Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts said. “I’m looking forward to more good performances tomorrow.
“I want to congratulate Lexie on her win in the triple jump. She has been consistent in the event all year and is well deserving of the victory.”
The Bucs get back to action at 10 a.m., Saturday. The meet concludes around 7:10 p.m., with the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays.
