ETSU qualifies seven competitors in five events

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 15, 2013) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams kicked off the 2013 outdoor season at the Charlotte 49er Classic on Friday, led by the strong performances of Ifrish Alberg (Paramaribo, Suriname) in the 100m dash and Demetria Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) in the 100m hurdles.

“I’m pleased with the first day of the meet,” said Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts. “We have quite a few people in finals tomorrow and I expect strong, competitive efforts throughout the team. We need to continue to get better and expect more of ourselves.”

The Buccaneers got off to a good start on the day with a solid showing from Kelly Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the long jump. The senior registered a leap of 5.60m on her first attempt, an outdoor-best for her, which placed fifth. Courtney Kinlaw (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) also competed in the long jump and placed 12th at 5.35m.

ETSU also boasted a solid launch in preliminary running events, with multiple runners qualifying for tomorrow’s finals. In the 100m hurdles, Edgecombe posted a time of 14.03 which placed her fourth among her competitors. Fast times continued for the women in the 100m dash where Emani Harrison (Columbia, S.C.) scurried to a time of 11.97 and a sixth-place standing. The ladies also qualified three runners in the 200m dash, including Harrison (24.40, 4th), Karissa Bertling (New Port Richey, Fla.) (24.42, 5th) and Keturah Williams (Alpharetta, Ga.) (24.77, 8th).

On the men’s side, Alberg led the way by blazing a 10.45 outdoor, collegiate best in the 100m dash which placed him first, while Diego Lawrence (Waxhaw, N.C.) dashed to a 10.66 time and fifth-place finish in the same event. Lawrence also scored a second-place, 7.36m collegiate best flight in the long jump, along with a strong showing from Tim O’Dell (Palm Coast, Fla.) who raced to second place in the 400m dash with a time of 48.57.
